Vier Jahre, in denen die Welt noch komplizierter und schwieriger geworden ist. Die gesellschaftlichen Verwerfungen unserer Zeit, die medizinisch unklare Lage, dies alles hat viele Bands und Künstler irritiert, manche sogar unwiderruflich demotiviert. Nicht so The Fright, die aus Herausforderungen eine besondere Energie ziehen und mit ‚Voices Within‘ ein in vielerlei Hinsicht zeitgemäßes und in seiner Intensität eindrucksvolles Werk erschaffen haben. Erneut hat sich die Band um Frontmann Lon Fright künstlerisch gesteigert, hat personell und stilistisch an wichtigen Stellschrauben gedreht und die gedrückte Gemütslage der Öffentlichkeit in ein zuversichtliches Metal-Statement umgewandelt. ‚Voices Within‘ ist ein Spiegelbild der Gegenwart, zugleich aber auch ein Verweis auf die Zukunft, ein trotz seiner unterschwelligen Melancholie uneingeschränkt positives Album. Oder wie es Lon Fright zusammenfasst: „Unser Sound hat sich verändert, er klingt etwas schwerfälliger und sperriger, beinhaltet dennoch weiterhin viele Pop-Elemente und eingängige Melodien. Wie Lavagestein, aus dem eine Blume entwächst. ‚Voices Within‘ ist ein Album gegen die Art des Erwachsenwerdens, bei der man den Blick für die Schönheit des Lebens verliert.“

Die Gründe für den großen Entwicklungsschritt von The Fright sind vielfältig und nicht zuletzt in einer wichtigen Umbesetzung begründet: Neu in der Band ist Gitarrist Chris North, der zusammen mit Lon Fright nun das kompositorische Rückgrat von The Fright bildet und mit seinem kraftvollen und erdigen Spiel die neue Scheibe maßgeblich prägt. Chris North hat eine Black Metal-Vergangenheit und verabreicht The Fright mit seinen Fingerfertigkeiten eine größere Bandbreite an Sounds und Stilen. Seine Riffs und Powerchords bilden die perfekte Grundlage und zugleich das atmosphärische Spannungsfeld für die hymnischen Gesänge seines Sängers. „In kompositorischer Hinsicht bin ich eher der Popper“, zwinkert Lon Fright, „aber durch Chris habe ich Black Metal-Lunte gerochen. Aufgrund seiner Gitarrenparts haben sich für uns viele neue Möglichkeiten eröffnet. Davon profitiert ‚Voices Within‘ unüberhörbar.“

Lon Fright spricht von Songs wie ‚Identity‘ mit seinem kompromisslosen Heavy Riff, von ‚End‘, in dem durch die geschickt eingewobene Tremolo-Gitarre sogar ein Shoegaze-Verweis durchschimmert, und besonders vom Albumfinale ‚Fall‘, dem kulminierenden Höhepunkt einer vom ersten bis zum letzten Ton fesselnden Scheibe. ‚Fall‘ zeigt The Fright von ihrer massiv metallischen Seite, mit schweren Doom-Attacken und thematischem Tiefgang. Lon Fright: „Es geht um Ellenbogenmentalität und Rastlosigkeit, um Menschen, die man auf dem Weg zum Gipfel verletzt. Ich sage: Wenn der Weg zum Gipfel nur mit Rücksichtslosigkeit zu erklimmen ist, dann stürze ich lieber und stehe nie wieder auf.“ Neben vielen neuen Stilmitteln findet man auf ‚Voices Within‘ aber natürlich auch typische The Fright-Tracks, wie etwa die erste Singleauskopplung/den ersten Videoclip ‚Choices‘ (VÖ. 11.02.2022) mit seiner Hoffnung auf die unzähligen Chancen, die das Leben bietet: „Der Text handelt vom Bewusstwerden der Endlichkeit, denn ohne Endlichkeit ergibt das Leben keinen Sinn.“ Am 01.04.2022 folgt dann ‚End‘ als zweite Single/zweiter Clip. Schließlich und parallel zum Album-Release am 29.04.2022 wird mit ,Illusion‘ und seiner Suche nach dem Kind in uns allen der Kreis der Singles/Videos abgerundet.

Tiefschürfende Inhalte also, und das in gewohnt hochwertiger Soundqualität: Aufgenommen wurde ‚Voices Within‘ im Band-eigenen ‚Dead Road Studio‘, eingetrommelt hat die Scheibe erneut Yannik „Rage“ Fleming, hinzu kommt der Gastbeitrag von Marie-Christin Herberg am Piano, für das Editing und den Feinschliff im Bereich Synthies wurde Disillusion-Mastermind Andy Schmidt ins Boot geholt, den Mix und das Mastering hat Audio-Engineer Dennis Koehne übernommen. Abgerundet wird das Werk durch ein außergewöhnliches Album-Cover: Das im Original 1 x 1 Meter große Gemälde des Leipziger Künstlers Benjamin Sprunk aka. ‚Xin1 Art‘ offenbart seine Besonderheit erst auf den zweiten Blick. Dieses Phänomen darf man allerdings durchaus als programmatisch bezeichnen, denn wer weiß, welchen (Metal-) Blick ‚Voices Within‘ in Zukunft auf The Fright werfen wird?

It's been more than four years since dark metal band The Fright (Leipzig/Germany) gave their
impressive testimony to great musical quality with their album last 'Canto V'. Four years
where the world became even more and more complicated and difficult. The social upheavals
of our time, the medically unclear situation, all this had irritated many bands and artists, some
are even irrevocably demotivated.
Not The Fright! They withdraw a special energy from all these challenges. With 'Voices
Within' they have created a work that is contemporary in many respects and impressive in its
intensity. The band around singer Lon Fright has once again improved artistically, has made
important adjustments in terms of personnel as well their style and get transformed this
depressed mood of the public into a confident metal statement. A reflection of the present but
also a nod to the future, 'Voices Within' is an unreservedly positive album despite its
underlying melancholy. Or as Lon Fright sums it up: “Our sound has changed, it sounds a bit
heavier and bulkier, but still contains many pop elements and catchy melodies. Like lava rock
from which a flower grows. 'Voices Within' is a record against the theme of growing old,
where you lose the sight of the beauty of life…”
There are many reasons for The Fright's major developmental step, not at least the important
line-up change: New in the band is guitarist Chris North. He and Lon Fright forms the new
compositional backbone of The Fright. His powerful and down-to-earth playing is the reason
of the new shape significantly. Because of his Black Metal background, Chris North injects
his sleight of hand into a wider range of sounds and styles to The Fright. His riffs and power
chords form the perfect base and at the same time the atmospheric field of tension for the
anthemic chants of his singer. "In terms of composition, I am more of a “popper”…", winks
Lon Fright, "…but I felt the fire of Black Metal because of Chris. His guitar parts are the
reason for a lot of new possibilities. 'Voices Within' clearly benefits from this…”
Lon Fright speaks of songs like 'Identity' with its uncompromising heavy riff, of 'End', in
which even a shoegaze reference shimmers through the cleverly woven tremolo guitar, and
especially of the album finale 'Fall', the culminating highlight of one of the first captivating
disc to the last note. 'Fall' shows The Fright from their massive metal side, with heavy doom
attacks and thematic depth. Lon Fright: “It's about bruises and restlessness, about people you
hurt on the way to the top. I say: If the way to the summit can only be climbed with
ruthlessness, then I'd rather fall and never get up again.” In addition to many new stylistic
devices, there are of course also typical ‘The Fright’ tracks on 'Voices Within', such as the
first single and video release called 'Choices' (release at February 11, 2022). It’s with its hope
for the countless opportunities that life offers: "…The lyric is about become awared of
finiteness, because without finitude life makes no sense." 'End' followed in March 2022 as the
second single/second clip. Finally, and parallel to the album release on April 29th, 2022, the
circle of singles/videos was rounded off with 'Illusion' and his search for the child in all of us.
Deep and dark content, and with their usual high sound quality: 'Voices Within' was recorded
in the band's own 'Dead Road Studio'. For the drums they got support by Yannik "Rage"
Fleming, and there is also a guest contribution by Marie-Christin Herberg on the piano.
Disillusion mastermind Andy Schmidt was brought on board for the editing and fine-tuning of
the synths, while audio engineer Dennis Koehne took care of the mix and mastering. The
work is rounded off by an extraordinary album cover: the original 1 x 1 meter painting by the
Leipzig artist Benjamin Sprunk aka. 'Xin1 Art' only reveals its special features at second
glance. This phenomenon can certainly be described as programmatic, because who knows
what (metal) look 'Voices Within' will cast on The Fright in the future?
