A fusion of hip hop, electronica and rock, MOK’s music has found its way onto BBC South and Radio 1 while the band’s relentless gigging has landed them support slots with Dizzee Rascal and De La Soul as well as appearances at UK festivals like Forgotten Fields, Blissfields and The Great Escape.

Combining painstaking production with an effortless stage presence, MOK’s full band set-up makes their live shows more energetic and immersive than most hip hop, while their heavy use of loops and drum-triggered samples means the ‘rock band’ tag doesn’t fit either. It’s all of the above and more.

At the fore of these tunes are the dual, and sometimes duelling, lead vocals of Lee and Grace – his, a barrage of short sharp rhymes; hers, languid melodic hooks that could well be culled from a forgotten era of classic pop. The lyrics too involve a similar contrast, dealing with hedonism and addiction, paranoia and triumph. While the band’s gigs are all about putting on a show and having fun – choruses you can sing to and breaks that get you moving – the words themselves tell a different story.

After a summer full of festivals, the band are now back in their home studio preparing their first collection of songs, to be released early next year. Having previously put out a string of standalone video singles, this looks like the next big step for a band that can only get bigger.
