TRADITIONAL POLISH RHYTHMS + CHICAGO FOOTWORK: Gary Gwadera is the solo project of Piotr Gwadera, a master drummer from Łódź originally hailing from Kielce.

Gwadera has the unique ability to infuse any music with an exceptional and surprising character. He is renowned for his involvement in ethnic, folk, rock, punk, experimental, jazz, and free improvisation projects. For several years, he has also been a leading drummer in the Polish traditional rural music scene, where he is celebrated for his exceptional fluency with triple rhythms on the "dżaz" drums, working with such bands as ODPOCZNO or RADICAL POLISH ANSAMBL. Gwadera has a passion for vintage drums and cymbals, as well as VHS tapes and all types of magnetic recordings.

Piotr Gwadera was awarded the second prize in the Polish Radio Folk Music Competition – New Tradition 2024 for his "magnetic personality, musical imagination, and unique blend of avant-garde and traditional influences," as well as the Golden Gęśle award for Best Instrumentalist for his "virtuosic approach to mazurka rhythms on unconventional (percussive) instruments."

"What does oberek, a traditional Polish dance, have in common with the beats created on the Roland TR-808 by Chicago footworkers? Piotr Gwadera, after hearing the compilation Bangs & Works, found there to be a lot. The musician is heavily immersed in the Lodz indie scene, exploring different facets of the contemporary view of traditional music in the group Radical Polish Ansambl, and in Odpoczno where he plays the dżaz. This simplified drumkit conquered the Polish countryside after the Second World War, and in Footberk Suite he combines his experience of the instrument’s sound with archival traditional recordings and electronic pads. As a result, oberek and footwork inspirations intertwine to such an extent that it’s sometimes hard to tell whether you’re driving through the Polish countryside or on the dance floor in the Windy City. ‘Gary’, the name he’s using on this release coming from Polish slang from drums.'

Considered as 1 of 18 best cassetes of 2024 by Daryl Worthington of the Quietus:
"Gary Gwadera, aka drummer Piotr Gwadera’s Far, far in Chicago. Footberk Suite stems from similarities he noticed in Chicago footwork and oberek – a centuries old traditional Polish folk dance rooted in high-spirited triplet rhythms. While voice and instrumental samples enter occasionally, this album is grounded in the hypnotic power of beats and rhythms. Using an acoustic drum kit augmented with electronics (including samples from vintage Roland drum machines and Polish drum sets made by LEM), Gwadera produces high velocity metamorphosis. Zooming in on the joyful common ground between far-flung dances."
