Songs like “Open Your Mind” or “Hay Luz” manage to achieve much more what only very few others succeed in: Teasing something exciting and new out of an already established context.

In English, crab apples are small apples often found lying around for decorative purposes, but which actually constitute the natural, untreated form of this fruit. Similarly purist and with an eye on the essentials, a Catalan trio of the same name has been turning heads in their Spanish homeland as well as in Europe over the past few years. From their debut “Right Here” (2014) to their third album “CRAP” (2021), The Crab Apples have been consistently refining their characteristic pop-rock style, focusing on melodic progression, flawlessly produced vocals and dynamic songwriting variation. This means Carla Gimeno, Laia Asina and Laia Martí are in the best tradition of all those bands who first brought this sound to the stages of this world thirty years ago. But the three of them aren’t obsessed with nostalgia, at least not just that.
