Tara Priya Short Info

Tara’s voice is striking – strong, powerful and utterly soulful.

Tara was born in San Francisco to a Persian mother, the niece of the much lauded poet and modernist painter Sohrab Sepehri, and an Indian father.

After a stint in LA and with a passion for the eclecticism of the UK music scene, she relocated to London in 2014 and released her first EP "Friends Like These" in June 2015.

Her musical influences include RZA, Luis Bacalov, James Blake, Nancy Sinatra, Dead Prez ,Wu-Tang Clan and Billie Holiday.

“Tara Priya‘s recent release shined light on how magnificent her vocals were, and even in today’s R&B climate of constant talent emerging from nowhere, her vocals were something to remember.” [EARMILK]

"‘Who That’ is the latest single to be taken from Tara Priya’s ‘Friends Like These’ EP. This latest offering sees Tara continuing her brand of lush, biting, grooving pop soul where she excels.
“Who That' blends a graceful funk beat, strings, classic ‘60s soul, and a wickedly catchy whistling hook and draws the listener in immediately...a pop gem" [POP MATTERS]

The 'Friends Like These' EP is a gorgeous collection of six compelling, atmospheric songs – Not At All, Friends Like These, previous single One Foot Out, Who That, Ghosts and Let You Go – that effortlessly meld elements of jazz, soul and the irresistible head nod grooves of ‘90’s hip hop to create a sound that’s classic, contemporary and totally original.

"Made up of six songs that smoothly combine jazz, soul and '90s hip hop, Friends Like These is a soundtrack for laid back nights, cruising underneath a starry sky.” [HYPETRAK]

It’s ghetto soul with a western electronic bent that enraptures from the first listen and calls to mind the likes of Morricone and J Dilla at times and the cool, laid back vibe of a smoky speakeasy at others. Simon Raymonde (Amazing Radio), Tom Robinson (6Music) and Jamie Cullum (Radio 2) have already picked up on the EP and have been playing tracks from it on their shows.

"Sitting somewhere between classic soul, trip hop and the slumped productions of J Dilla...a contagious, potent statement of intent." [CLASH]

"Watching her charm London crowds with her beautiful voice is bliss." [TIME OUT]
