Scaredy Cat | Single | 2019 |
On her self-titled EP we see an artist starting to find her sound and it is clear that she is on the verge of something special.
"You warm me up from across the room" the 24 year old songwriter exclaims on her dynamic debut single "Catch Me". It's a stand-out line that defines the five song record in which she wrestles with love, loss, and everything between. Little does she know that her songs are warming the hearts of those in the cold-prairies of which she comes from.
Born and raised in Regina, Saskatchewan, she has been writing songs for her own ears since 2010, however it was not until 2017 that she started to cut her teeth in the local scene. Attending local shows for years, this is where she met her now backing band, which is comprised of Gage McGuire, Madison Nicol, and Chris Dimas.
The EP's 5 songs often come in just under the 4 minute mark, giving enough time to allow yourself to cling onto every word, but short enough that it leaves you wanting more. They are the consummate songs for a late drive home, or the score to a deep conversation with your closest friend.
You can feel the power in Burwell's voice. Her tremendous control and laid back melodies make her first effort an easy listen. With big plans for upcoming tours and festivals, it is apparent that this won't be the last time we hear the name Marissa Burwell.
