Born and raised in Novi Sad, Dojo started writing songs at the age of 16 and published her first songs in 2014, releasing her digital EP “Endings”. Dojo’s music has been noted for it’s atypical combination of vocal elements, which blends cinematic and atmospheric sound with traditional singing from the Balkans. Musically, she draws influence from Thom York, Pj Harvey, Grimes, Bat for Lashes, Patti Smith, Nina Simone, Philip Glass, John Williams, Massive Attack.

Dojo releases her debut album Solstice, a gripping self-published venture. Two years since she first stepped into the spotlight as Dojo, Dunja Dačić releases her first studio album “Solstice”. The debut comes a year after her acclaimed EP Endings.

Dojo recorded Solstice completely by herself – from playing instruments and singing, to recording, mixing, and (post)production. Solstice is a harrowing walk through different emotional states, battles, rises and falls. The bitter album then grips you in its atmosphere of darkness and sorrow, only to finally leave you at a place of hope, a thin ray of light that shines through the cracks. You’re left naked with an only feeling that life is, in fact, worth living.

Imagine a scene from a film by the maestro Hayao Miyazaki. Imagine the edge of a forest, where night and day meet; fall and winter; good and evil. Animated characters talk to each other there in a different, pagan language. They could very well be Ryuichi Sakamoto, Kate Bush, and Thom Yorke. The three of them met on that special day – the solstice – when the night is longest in the year and the sun is reborn. They are sitting and talking about how to defeat fears, how to battle depression, accept their diagnoses and live life by their rules, at any cost.

What happens in this imaginary scene is left to you, but what’s most important for this story is how to paint this scene with sound, how to give it a shadow, a hum, restlessness, a chilling feeling...? This is the question Dunja Dacic aka Dojo set out to answer: “I wanted to summon the light and hope inside me and towards me, and in a metaphorical way show this constant struggle that’s inside me and people in general.”

Six songs make up “Solstice”, with “Horses” and “Wilderness” already peaking visitors’ interest at Dojo’s concerts. The remaining tracks were either made or received their final form during the last few months.

“I did everything by myself: from recording, mixing, mastering... the process was difficult but exciting and highly rewarding. To get myself into the “mood” to work, I flipped the day for night. I’d usually start work once the sun sets, and wouldn’t stop until it rose again. On a good day I’d remember to eat. Solitary walks in a park nearby my home helped shape ideas for specific sounds and arrangements.”

The angelic psalms “Horses” and “Wilderness” are two impressionistic landscapes or dreamy vistas where light and darkness fight endlessly. “Soul” hypnotizes in a similar way as does PJ Harvey in “C’mon Billy”, and is expected to have a video debut directed by Marina Uzelac. Finally, “White Witch” subtly invites us into Lynch-like darkness. The entire “Solstice” is branched by the “Tree of Life” – a southern gothic spell that appeals to Jeffrey Lee Pierce fans and his The Gun Club songs. Finally, the album closes with “The Hunger”, a power ballad of pure distorted longing.
