crashcaptains Short Info

Crashcaptains are a band in-between.

They’re adrift, out on the Atlantic, somewhere between Berlin and Seattle. Between poetry and post rock, distorted Fenders and somber strings, summer and fall. They speak German, but they sing English, stating openly that they don’t want to choose between loud or quiet and that there’s room for exploration in contemporary pop music.

Their first full-length album „Some Time Soon“ will be released on January 31st, 2014 via Kitchen Records / Believe Digital. It was written and produced, over the course of 4 years, in different places, by the band themselves. At times it was a lifeline:

When the band realized in late 2008 that they had hit a dead end, they parted ways with their drummer, dropped their old name, and fell into a hole. They had grown up together, playing music in the Berlin scene, but the only thing left after six intense years was a set of half-complete new songs, possibly the best they had written so far. They resembled a clean break with the band's old approach to songwriting, a change of style, and a chance to start over. So they held on to them, when things were unclear.

Recordings began with a few simple demos provided by lead singer Nicolas Heintz, half complete lyrics, and plenty of liberty. Soon, rough drum parts were tracked in rehearsal rooms, with good friends and borrowed gear on an old PC. Bass, guitars, pianos were added wherever there was enough space. An accordion was bought, a Rhodes was rented. Any environment that worked was good enough to keep going.

The band met Felix Menzel in early 2010 while looking for new drummers, and quickly realized that playing with him felt right. Finally, after a rough two years of holding out, things were starting to come along. They christened themselves Crashcaptains and decided to pre-release a few rough versions of the songs to gain traction. 2011 saw them playing a lot more shows, supports and festivals to try out the new material on stage. While they were making a name for themselves in the Berlin area, recordings continued, and the band decided to write more material for the album. Soon, they tracked two additional songs, and before long the other one of the Heintz brothers, Tobias, began putting the finishing touches on the record. They successfully crowdfunded the physical production of the album with help from their fans in 2013 and self-organized the release. With a new bass player, Simon Lohss, the group was complete again. They had worked their way out, and were standing, as a different band, on the other side.

„Some Time Soon“ is about making choices and pursuing one's passion. About the spaces that cleave, like half-open drawers, between what we say and what we mean. The time we spend figuring out who we want to be. About trying, failing, about falling in love and starting over. Nicolas' lyrics are confessions, honest and revealing, while still imaginative. They're well versified and catchy, yet deep enough to stick around.

The album was recorded in a patchwork-fashion, sometimes with months between recording sessions, and has a somewhat heterogeneous feel, like a good mix-tape: There’s fast-paced, compact indie pop tracks (“Kissing a stranger”), solemn, gritty pieces (“Grand Central North”), and songs that explore a grey area between tight arrangements and the moody dynamics of post-rock (“Saltwater”). Its a lush record, with lots of different instruments, ambitious songwriting, and a sense of constant movement, that is similar to the band themselves - always on the move, even if it takes a detour.

“Some Time Soon” will be released January 31st, 2014 via Kitchen Records / Believe Digital.
