Venture - Ska Folk Rock Live Act in Wigan

Venture Short Info

Venture are a folk-rock band from Wigan, UK who formed after a one-off recording came together by complete accident. Vocalist/guitarist Miles Burrows and vocalist/keyboardist Kate Mason, found themselves with a studio space and producer after another local band dropped out of a recording session. The two had been collaborating on music for some time and took the opportunity to record an original song, “Take Me Home.” Having thought that this was a one-off, nothing was thought of it until members of Miles’s previous band, Skint, got wind of the recording and praised it, adding that they would like to be part of a new project. With Michael Hargreaves joining on drums, Lucy Burrows as another vocalist, Abby Healey on bass and Danny Simm on Ukulele and banjitar, Venture were fully formed by December of 2012.
Venture’s immediate priority was to gig in the North West area, capitalizing on both the support and connections that had been built up by Miles with his previous band. During this initial phase of live performance, Venture played at Night & Day in Manchester, Barfly in Liverpool, the DW Stadium, home of Wigan Athletic FC, as part of 2112 Music Festival in the centre of Wigan alongside River Jumpers and alongside Chief in a house-party style basement show with a sold-out capacity of 150.
Once this run of gigs began to wind down, Venture made the decision to head into the studio to record their debut EP. “Stay True,” was recorded in May/June of 2013 and released in July of the same year. The band released via iTunes and Spotify in the same month, lifting them above Fyfe Dangerfield and Seth Lakeman in the iTunes Singer/Songwriter charts in the process.
After the release of the EP, Abby and Danny left the band to pursue other musical projects, with Josh Fairbeast replacing Abby on bass. This change didn’t affect their schedule though, continuing to gig at more popular venues in the North West such as The Roadhouse in Manchester, the Parish in Huddersfield and they have been booked to play The Millstone Rocks Festival in May of 2014. In January 2014, the band signed with ScreamLite Records.
Now however, Venture are back with a new single and a new line-up. However, don’t think that they’ve lost any of the swagger and passion that marked their debut EP, “Stay True.” The band have added Thom Mutch to guitar duties to add another layer in the sound, something that is evident from the new single, “This One’s For You.” A slice of energetic ska punk delivered by both Miles and Lucy’s combined vocal talents, this story of the disillusioned delivers singalongs and a beat that means you can’t help but move your feet.
Due for release on November 3rd via www.screamliterecords.bandcamp.com and all major digital distribution services, this single will mark the start of the process for their debut full length. Over the next few months, the band and their label, ScreamLite Records, are planning to get more tracks recorded, teasing the singles and finalising the debut album that Venture deserve to release. What you have here is the beginning, the lead off single. The process may be a long one, but the album is already in the planning stages. This single serves as your aperitif. You’ll be wanting more pretty soon after.
Here’s what was said about the debut EP, “Stay True;”
“...final track ‘Stay True’ that is the stand-out, a perfect three-minute pop song. A tale of hopes and dreams with a killer chorus made for teenagers that just want to bounce around. If they produce an album’s worth of songs like ‘Stay True’ in the future, Screamlite Records might just have that special shiny in their collection after all.” – Behind The Scene Gloucestershire

“...after four tracks it’s clear that Venture have a real knack for writing catchy, pop melodies over ska rhythms with perfectly pitched vocal harmonies and a hint of up tempo folk.” – Listen With Monger Blog

“This band has the makings of something great – the introductions to each of their songs are fantastic and set the pace... it’s a pleasure to listen to...” – Jack Buckley, Dyathinkysaurus Reviews Blog

Big, brash and bubbly, Venture are fantastical; musically, vocally, lyrically. Their infectious energy draws you in within seconds and keeps you totally enthralled throughout.- Artree.org
