New Heights | Single | 2017 |
They formed in May 2017, Jake Vickers, Ed Dowling and Sam Davies met at sixth form college in Northwich, Cheshire and the line-up was completed by drummer Adam Spence from Chester.
Each of them bring very different influences to the band and this, along with Jake’s unique voice, is reflected in their distinctive sound which is instantly recognisable as The Zangwills. Described as being, ‘Like nothing else out there, an immensely valuable quality when so many bands disappear into a slurry of sameness’ by Getintothis.
They are a charismatic band who are generating a lot of interest as their unusual, youthful vibe and energy set them apart. The four-piece have gained a reputation for their strong live sets, steadily increasing the capacity of host venues around their North West base. They have a growing army of enthusiastic followers who seem to be prepared to travel in significant numbers to watch them play live and can somehow already sing along to the lyrics even before the tracks are released.
The band’s debut single New Heights was released in December 2017 followed by The Horrors of Sobriety, on 30th March 2018 both received great feedback from press and industry connections and most importantly - audiences. They have released music steadily since then including 2 EP's, It's Really up to You and In Amongst the Glitter. Spielberg Sweethearts taken from the latter EP, was out on 16th August 2019 gaining immediate support from Spotify's curated playlist. 2020 saw the release of their post lockdown single Could I, popular with the media, and described as ‘An anthem dedicated to a longing for human connection and perhaps the most relatable single of the year thus far’ by Second Society Report.
One of their highlights was being approached by Maisie Williams (Game of Thrones) and young, BAFTA-winning director, Lowri Roberts after they were in the crowd at the band’s earlier (sold out) Manchester Academy show. Realising that the song Judas on the Dancefloor was about the issues of spiking, groping and harassment on nights out, they asked if they could produce a video for it. Needless to say, it took ages to organise due to Covid and Maisie’s schedule, but it was eventually shot over three days in December 2020 at The Moth Club in Hackney. LIVE – The four-piece have gained a reputation for their strong live sets. Their regional dates tend to sell out in advance including Deaf Institute (Sept 2019) and Academy 3 (Feb 2020 and Sept 2021). They have played national headline dates as far apart as Edinburgh and Portsmouth and their supports have included artists as diverse as Yungblud for SJM and The Charlatans at their North by Northwich takeover. Festival appearances have included Dot 2 Dot, Focus Wales, DPP, Sound City and a Saturday, mainstage appearance at Wychwood Festival 2019 alongside ABC.
