The Herberts are a Reading-based collective of musicians who started in November 2012 over a cup of herbal tea.

The idea for the group was inspire by a collective love of all things soul, jazz, blues, gospel, reggae and funky. They also wanted to write original music inspired by their many heroes, but not to create a facsimile of them. The Herberts played their first gig in early 2013.

The group have played many venues around the South East including Proud Galleries, Global Cafe (Reading), BBC Introducing at the Oakford, The Good Ship and plenty of others. In the summer of 2013, from early inception, they very quickly played their first festivals, including Hideaway Festival (Henley), Waterfest (Reading), Braziers Park Open Day (Oxfordshire) and Here Comes The Sun climaxing in the Caversham Arts Festival where they appeared as a 12 piece band with brass section.

Since then they've regularly played gigs, writing more songs and getting increasingly tighter, and less 'flabby'.

Their debut single, Love is on the Run, released in 2014 (and still on Amazon/I tunes) was recorded a mere 5 months after their inception. The group are currently working on their debut album with the support of several studios who admire the music and the Fire Station, Windsor. We hope to release the album by the end of 2015.

Quotes about The Herberts

“Original, refreshing and a musical ‘good time’. You cannot dissolve a fruit pastel in your mouth without chewing it and cannot listen to The Herberts without tapping your feet and wanting to join in.” - Rock Radio for the East Midlands

“a really original sound. Love the boogie-woogie piano. Lovely to hear a singer being so confident” - Kent Radio

“What I love about The Herberts is that they appear to be an extended social club, ever-expanding, with what appears to be too many members to fit on a stage, but every member who joins ship adds to the deep soulful melodies of the group. This band make ramshackle an art form, and crucially project what making and performing music should fundamentally be about – fun.” – Joanna Kelly, Reading 4U Community radio.

“The Herberts provide a loose relaxed and inclusive atmosphere bringing a warm enjoyment to smiling faces” – Barry, The Big Untidy

“The Crazy World of Arthur Brown meets Brian Cant, with a world vibe, slightly bonkers festival style fun for all ages’ Karena K of Rattlin’ Bone

In January 2014 The Herberts released their debut EP ‘Songs To Shout & Whisper’ featuring You’ve Got a Soul, Love is on the Run and Gypsy, which is available at their gigs.
