The Boxing are a three piece that have emerged onto the Leeds music scene offering a melodic and brooding take on modern psych.

Encouraged by the northern city’s knack of producing moody ‘of the moment’ guitar bands such as Eagulls and Autobahn, the band started playing together after meeting at university. In between working day jobs and involving themselves in various separate musical projects they’ve spent the last few years relentlessly sculpting their sound.

Their debut single ‘Annabelle’ is a melancholy and woozy trip into their world that burrows itself deeper under the skin with every listen. The tracks layered vocal glides over lurching bass notes before a rasped refrain erupts over a chorus of guitars. ‘It’s about masochism really’, explains guitarist/singer Harrison Warke. ‘I’ve always been fascinated by it, the strange habit of enjoying your own misery.’ The songwriting is inspired by the likes of Elliott Smith, the dark psychedelia of the Cramps, and traces of Pornography era Cure can be heard in the echo-drenched guitar and cavernous drums.

Catch the band supporting DIY favorites ‘Trudy and the Romance’ on Wednesday 19th of October at Oporto, Leeds.
