This marked the end of a fine Summer which saw them open the Main Stage at YNot Festival before playing Kendal Calling the same weekend. This did not go un-noticed and 2017 ended with Sugarthief supporting the Twang at 4 of their anniversary gigs.
Brothers Jordi & Jack James created Sugarthief after a few years busking and playing open-mic nights. Their desire to play their ‘home-recorded’ music in a full band setup led them to join forces with ex-school pals Reece Downton (Drums) and Luke Owen (Bass).
The band’s fast trajectory began at the start of last year when they posted their first buzz-worthy track, ‘New Ends’, online in March 2016. It was quickly picked up by taste-makers and press – gaining Sugarthief regular spins on BBC Introducing WM and Amazing Radio – before the drop of pop-drenched second single ‘Crowing Youth’, saw them invited to perform an unplugged live session in the Mailbox studio at BBC Birmingham.
These two tracks were pressed to 7” vinyl a mere month later courtesy of Flying Vinyl, making Sugarthief the first band to be included via submission of a demo.
The rapid-fire drop of a trio of tracks in 2016, was completed with the bitter-sweet ‘Joy Affair’ in December, this was accompanied by their debut video. Their 4th Single – When did it all go so wrong? was released in March 2017 to a Sell-Out show at the Sunflower Lounge, Birmingham. 5th track ‘Provide’ was released FREE on the same day they played the main stage at YNOT Festival.
Stricken by an affable indie-rock vision, the young four-piece (Jordi, Reece and Luke – 17 years old and Jack 20) document modern teenage experiences via jangly guitars, pop-ridden basslines and hook laiden lyrics.
“All of the songs are really about my view of a pretty screwed up world”, says front-man Jordi. “As a typical teenager I like to question everything I read, hear and see. You start to unearth different emotions and experience new feelings, and music helps me to explore and express these.”
Sugarthief are due back in the Studio to record 6 new tracks – and hope to release an EP before the turn of the year. They released their 5th track ‘Provide’ on July 25th 2017 to a Sold Out, Sunflower Lounge (Birmingham), and have some exciting support slots lined up in the Autumn.
