Selectric Short Info

Selectric was formed in 2012, largely intended as a vanity project by composer/bassist Si Paton. Not being someone that is known for going down the simple, straightforward or sensible route, wrote a bunch of tunes that needed more people than was considered necessary to play on. Naturally this is a very hard thing to do, so a fair amount of chloroform was required.
A trio of songs were made and support slots for forward-thinking bands like Alpha Male Tea Party, Up C Down C, Theo, Her Name is Calla, Shiver and 100 Onces were blagged. Through this, they gained a fanbase, which only 40% of whom are confirmed psychopaths. Not having the courage to escape, guitarist Tom Kenworthy, violinist Agata Kubiak and drummer Joao Galvao remained and new recruits; keyboardist Leo Mculloch, trumpeter Anna Rawlings and Tom Bush – the second biggest bass clarinettist on the alt folk scene – were somehow convinced playing gigs with the band was a good idea. With that, recording for second EP ‘Insultc’ was commenced and intends to be released at some point.
Between the band, being raised on an unhealthy mix of Jaga Jazzist, Slayer, Pigbag, Polar Bear, Naked City, Black Eyes, Pierre Boulez, Mahavishnu Orchestra and Battles, Selectric creates a sound that is truly their own, by directly ripping off everything else around them.
Future plans for the band involve splitting up due to musical differences and reforming at inflated prices when the records have reached a degree of cult status. Are they a post-modern joke? A bad gimmick that went too far? An exercise in not knowing when enough is enough? These are all questions for academics with too much time on their hands to write about in their journals. Right now, the band are playing as many shows as they can whilst hoping Si doesn’t have yet another onstage breakdown.
