Their reputation for flamboyant, charmingly quirky, upbeat and slightly odd performances combined with magnificent musicianship has led to sell out gigs locally with 3 mini tours around the UK including a stint with with alt-folk royalties Moulettes, 3 award nomination and a Silver Award for their film sound track to My Lonely Me. They are currently in the studio developing their new material after a hectic touring year to be released in June 2016.
Quite appropriately dreamt up by Norwegian Liverpool musician Kaya in an off the beaten track restaurant in the fairytale darkness of the city of Prague in December 2010. A band project, encompassing all that is music, story telling, art, creative flair, melancholy and just that little bit of silliness.
Like a fevered lab experiment Science of the Lamps has become a beast of proportions, lighting up the crowds at festivals and high profile events alike in UK and abroad. Noted appearances include Speakeasy at Liverpool’s Kazimier, Bluecoat and Epstein Theatre, Manchester’s Ruby Lounge, Deaf Institute, Night & Day and Castle Hotel, London’s Dublin Castle, Slaughtered Lamb and the Queen’s Head and festivals such as Tramlines, Ramsbottom, The Great Escape, Liverpool Sound City, Above the Beaten Track, Liverpool International Music Festival, Threshold, Standon Calling, Hartlepool Folk Festival, Disconnect (Scotland) and gigs in Los Angeles, USA, Norway, France and Germany.
The second release ‘Duckling Hell’ was named by Liverpool Sound and Vision as:
“one of the finest songs released by an artist in Liverpool in the last decade”
They have worked in collaboration over the 4 years since its inception with local & international talent such as, Grethe Børsum, Thom Morecroft, Greta Svabo Bech, Mark Brockelsby and Luke Moore – the latter two now permanent band members. Now an 8 piece outfit, of drums, bass, cello, keys, acoustic and lead guitar plus vocal harmonies from close harmony backing group ‘The Usherettes’, their inspiration comes from vaudeville, visual art, early Hollywood movie scores, Nordicana, wine, flamenco, trip-hop, music boxes, Paris and whiskey bars.
“A magic veil of true class.” – Liverpool Live
“An alluring hybrid of driving rock and burlesque blues.” – Bido Lito
In 2014 the band composed and recorded the soundtrack to forthcoming feature film “My Lonely Me” and also released their second EP Candela, launched at a sell-out gig in Williamson Tunnels.
“It’s oId Pop in its nicest possible form, the song writing ticking all those imaginary boxes” #SRCZ
Their reputation for flamboyant, quirky, upbeat and odd performances combined with magnificent musicianship has led to bookings at some of the best venues in the North West and further afield.
