Rodrigo Santa María Short Info

Rodrigo Santa María's jazz inspired poetic Latin chambermusic is accompied by the wonderful flugelhorn player Alan Sommer and the double-bass player Sergio (Checho) Gómez. Exuding Brazilian laid-backness, "Rodrigo's soft voice is of timeless beauty." (Nürnberger Nachrichten)

On his current album "Èlitro" the Chilean musician and composer Rodrigo Santa María presents eleven new compositions and arrangements with his band "Rodrigo Santa María".
His music is deeply rooted in Latin-America, reflecting its entire range and fusing different traditions – from Brazilian Bossa Nova, Chacarera and Argentinean Zamba of the eastcoast, over Peruvean Lando, the rhythms of the high plains to the Chilean folklore of the westcoast.

Aside from fusing the many different Latin-American traditions, his style stands out mainly because it skillfully blends classic-modern music, one of Rodrigo's focus during his music studies in Chile.

His guitar technique is modern, virtuoso and very laid-back. His songs are a reminiscence of Bossa Nova, invoked by the contrast of harmonic complexity, coupled with traditional elements and Rodrigo's style of singing. A rhythm-infused style that can best be described as "Bossa Chilena".

Featuring double-bass, flugelhorn and percussion (occassionally), "Rodrigo Santa María's trio"are the ideal lineup for Rodrigo's toned down arrangements. Alan Sommer's unobtrusive trumpet soli perfectly blend into Rodrigo Santa Maria's songs in perfect harmony.

Rodrigo Santa María began his career at the age of fourteen in his Chilean hometown Antofagasta and deepened his knowledge of South American music during his studies at the Escuela Moderna de Música in Santiago de Chile with accomplished Chilean musicians like Guillermo Rifo, Toly Ramírez and Ignacio Urrejola and his professor of guitar and composition Juan Antonio (Chicoria ) Sanchez. Santa María's first formation, "Santa Mentira", a collaboration with outstanding Chilean singers such as, Ammy Cupid, Bárbara Lira and Cristina Araya, and the renowned Jazz singer Eva Cortes (composer and arranger).

The Berlin-based musician, Rodrigo Santa María made his solo debut, "Sobras Completas" (2010) with his trio, featuring: vocals, guitar, flugelhorn and double-bass. Santa María's second masterpiece, "Elitro" (2012) is a beautiful Latin American sparse arrangements styles such as, Bossa Nova, Chacarera, Zamba and Landó to create a kind of "Bossa Chilena", elegantly combined with Chilean folklore. Santa María continues to explore the Latin-American traditions and the classic-modern music fusion, creating new compositions, simple but complex arrangements and adding his soft timeless and beautiful voice to evoke what was coined as a "Bossa Chilena"!
