Victoria Park | Single | 2018 |
Drawing on hypnagogic pop and industrial rock influences the band’s experimental ethos has caught the attention of DJs such as Steve Lamacq, Amy Lame and Gideon Coe on BBC 6 Music as well as Bethan Elfyn, Huw Stephens, Janice Long and Adam Walton on BBC RW and Radio Cymru. They played FOCUS Wales Festival in May 2018 on the BBC Broadcast Stage in what was only their third gig at the time and were singled out as “having the potential to soundtrack a generation" by Drowned in Sound. The band has been described as "surreal, unhinged psychedelia" and compared to artists such as Suede, MGMT, Syd Barrett and David Bowie. Their second single ‘Victoria Park’ was released by Libertino Records and their third single 'Day Off' was described by Gigwise as veering "between being a paranoiac industrial rock hammering and shimmering, escapist 60s psychedelia". After playing Tallinn Music Week, FOCUS Wales and Other Voices in 2019, their tracks ‘Day Off’ and ‘Kookly Rose’ were released as a double a-side 7” vinyl by Popty-Ping Records at the end of 2019.
“Great Welsh psych.” – Amy Lame, BBC 6 Music
“It’s so psychedelic, like something that’s been recorded in the middle of the sixties, but new!” – Huw Stephens
“They have the potential to soundtrack a generation.” – Dom Gourlay, Drowned in Sound
“Veers between being a paranoiac industrial rock hammering and shimmering, escapist 60s psychedelia.” – Gigwise
The combination of compelling melodiousness, richly layered orchestrations. Balances between the moody timber of Peter Perrett, former frontman of New Wavish legends The Only Ones and the sensuous high-pitched vocals of Welshman Green Gartside, mastermind of the 70s/80s pop act Scritti Politti. – Turn Up the Volume
“That sounds momentous to me. The imagination is bubbling over the sides of the recording, it cannot be contained. I love the way the singer sounds a little bit like Marc Bolan, he’s got that real sense of wonder and playfulness in his voice.” – Adam Walton, BBC Introducing Wales
“I was enchanted by some Syd Barrett-like reminiscence of childhood psychedelia, and traces of a very young Brett Anderson. Also, they seem to have the quintessential Welsh-ness, i.e. trippy psychedelia in them.” – Ingrid Kohlta, Tallinn Music Week
“I was struck immediately by Declan Andrews’ voice, working somewhere in that Bowie/Bolan range, though I think Andrews has a sharper ear for vocal melody.” – Austin Town Hall
“Amazing voice, great production.” – Janice Long, BBC Radio Wales
