R51 Short Info

R51 are an alternative rock/gaze pop band from Belfast, Northern Ireland. Forming in 2012 they released their first single "Boxkite" in 2013. To date they are a self-produced 5 piece, inspired by shoegaze, alternative rock, and dream pop.

Following their debut single Boxkite in July 2013, R51 saw the addition of Aaron Black, R51 then self produced the follow-up track “Slowhound.”

They built their studio as students and self-recorded the thoughtful Artsy-pop song "Boxkite" and it's b-side "I Could Kill You Sometimes" as a first of self released singles. Their second single "Slowhound", a textural, meaningful love song brick walled with saturated guitars, 3 dimensional drums and dreamy heartfelt vocals from Melyssa Shannon. The B-side “Skelf” is a thoughtful acoustic track, bent with distorted vocals and dream-pop drum machines. They recorded their first EP “Pillow Talk” over the winter of 2014 as the definitive lineup with Matt Killen on drums.

The ”Pillow Talk" EP was launched in 2015, in Bar Sub at Queens University Student’s Union Belfast. The EP was critically acclaimed by Irish blogs TheThinAir.net, Chordblossom.com, Pastie Bap, EncoreNI and the title track went on to be championed by BBC's Across The Line, where they performed a live session in BBC Blackstaff house in 2015, this led to their shows at Reading and Leeds Festivals 2015.

During an extremely busy summer touring Northern Irish Festivals such as Spectrum Festival, Aperture, Stendhal & Sunflowerfest, their set at BBC introducing stages at Reading and Leeds Festivals in 2015 which was followed by a flurry of homecoming shows, including being added to the Dr Marten's Stand For Something Tour, Supporting Lonely The Brave.

R51 are currently recording a follow up EP to “Pillow Talk” due for release in February 2016.
