PIOTR ORZECHOWSKI ‘PIANOHOOLIGAN’ Born in 1990, pianist and composer Piotr Orzechowski, also known as ‘Pianohooligan’ is one of the most award-winning jazz musicians of the younger generation.

A graduate of Berklee College of Music, he has received many prizes, the most important of which was 1st Prize at the Montreux Jazz Solo Piano Competition (2011), which he was the first Pole to win in the legendary Swiss festival’s history.

The artist is the leader of the High Definition Quartet, with which he has won several international competitions – among them, Jazz Hoeilaart in Belgium (2011) – and undertaken a collaboration with contemporary jazz trumpet giant Randy Brecker which resulted in two concert tours: in Poland (2012) and the Persian Gulf countries (2013). As a pianist he toured with highly esteemed jazz musicians such as Victor Mendoza (Taiwan, 2014), or Perico Sambeat (Ecuador, 2015). Besides other great personalities like Adrian Utley of Portishead, Carlos Zíngaro, or Avishai Cohen, Piotr collaborated also with the contemporary music giants: Philip Glass, Krzysztof Penderecki or Steve Reich.

He has to his credit four albums: a solo disc with arrangements and pieces inspired by the œuvre of Krzysztof Penderecki – Experiment: Penderecki (Decca/Universal, 2012); a disc recorded with High Definition Quartet entitled HOPASA, containing his own compositions (EmArcy/Universal, 2013); and an album recorded in collaboration with Marcin Masecki accompanied by the Capella Cracoviensis, entitled Bach Rewrite (Decca/Universal, 2013).

His newest solo album titled ‘15 Studies for the Oberek’ (Decca/Universal, 2014) is a collection of the artist’s musical reflections devoted to this Polish dance form. The 15 pieces contained on the disc represent an attempt to discover universal properties of folk music, as well as to confront them with the language of contemporary music.

Esteemed for individual recognizable style, which is the result of crossing the boundaries between musical genres - contemporary and modern improvised music, referring to the tradition of romanticism and impressionism, and on the other hand, daring musical deconstruction.
Orzechowski is the winner of such honors as the Grand Prix Jazz Melomani in the Music Lovers’ Hope category (2013) and the New Hope of Polish Jazz title awarded by Jazz Forum magazine (2014), he has received nominations for the most important Polish prizes: the Coryphaeus of Polish Music (2012), TVP Kultura’s Guarantees of Culture (2013) and the Fryderyk (2013, 2014).
