Peter Cat Short Info

With one foot in a danceable future, and the other in a troubadour past, Peter Cat bring disparate musical elements together to create something fresh, memorable and exciting. The band’s signature sound blends crooner stylings and analog warmth with post-punk freneticism – think Belle & Sebastian meets Franz Ferdinand over coffee to chat about their favourite Scott Walker LPs. An impeccable sense of classic songwriting hangs over the whole affair, with each tune pruned to three-minute pop perfection. They’ve been variously described as having “echoes of the best of Blur” and as “wonderfully jaunty yet intellectually deep, [with] just the right mix of brilliance and weirdness.”

The band formed in London, England, and named themselves after the jazz bar owned by the seminal Japanese novelist, Haruki Murakami. They’re made up of guitarist and singer Neil Gillespie, whose distinctive baritone vocal channels John Grant and Neil Hannon of The Divine Comedy; keyboard player and sound director George Lewkowicz; bassist Mark James, and drummer Archie Wolfman. Since their formation in early 2015, they have recorded their debut EP (2016, forthcoming) with producer Phil Kay (Melodic Records; Working For A Nuclear Free City) and performed at Standon Calling Festival. Their first single ‘Keeping Up With Jacob’ was well-received, and was described by the Spectral Nights blog as “[a] distant cousin of XTC's 'Making Plans For Nigel'...but also has that sense of fun and hooks that served The Coral so well
