Oleg Kireyev NY Project Short Info

Oleg Kireyev is an internationally recognized musician, frequently on tour and playing to appreciative audiences in Europe and the U.S.
The Express and Star, UK, says Kireyev is “a Russian sax player with a reputation for hard swing and high excitement.”

A well-traveled person, Oleg has lived in Poland, England and America. Poland, although an Eastern Bloc country, was famous for its wide array of high-caliber jazz performances and it was there that Kireyev was first noticed there by international jazz aficionados. A scholarship to the Bud Shank jazz saxophonist school pulled him into the international jazz scene, where he is now one of the most well known musicians. After receiving a special award for outstanding performance at the Montreux Jazz Festival in Switzerland he began to garner worldwide respect at jazz festivals and jazz clubs.

Oleg has participated in many innovative and provocative international jazz projects in a recording/performing career spanning three decades. His creative ideas are vast, from mainstream and ethno to jazz rock and world music. “Incredibly good” “soft & enthusiastic” and “stylish and top notch” — are phrases music critics write about the voice of his saxophone.
As musician Bud Shank says: "Oleg's playing is a marvelous combination of styles, incorporating a whole lot of players. I hear echoes of the 1920’s and John Coltrane combined with unstructured jazz."

Howard Mandel (president of the Jazz Journalists Association), says Oleg is “born to blow” in a dervish-like manner while “swinging genuinely hard”; the Express Star (UK) marks Oleg’s playing as “hard swing and high excitement”; the British Evening Mail calls Kireyev a “revolutionary Russian reedman’, who “is establishing a reputation as an entertaining and skilled musician”.
Oleg performed at: Symphony Space (NYC), Iridium Jazz Club (NYC), Yoshi's (CA), Smoke (NYC), Smalls (NYC), Chris Jazz Cafe (PA), Blues Alley (Washington, D.C.), etc.

Jazz Festivals: Montreux Jazz Festival (SH), London Jazz Festival (UK), SXSW (USA), New York Jazz Improv (USA), Malborough Jazz Festival (UK), Liechfild Jazz Festival (UK), 9/22/13 Birmingham Jazz Festival (UK), Klaipeda Jaz Festival (LT) and many others.

Oleg Kireyev, James Weidman and Eddie Henderson Quintet

The Super Quintet comes to life as Eddie Henderson joins with The Weidman + Kireyev Quartet bringing together some of the Jazz world's genuine nobility. Joined with maestros James Weidman, Oleg Kireyev, Henderson and troupe create an enduring modern jazz played with poise of mind, depth of feeling and a brilliant display of artistry. The seeds of the Super Quintet were planted in June of 2013 when James Weidman teamed creative forces with Russian saxophonist Oleg Kireyev, whose bright, emotive sound has made him a noted success on the US scene.

Eddie Henderson is one of the few trumpeters who remains strongly influenced by Miles Davis' early fusion period. Henderson grew up in San Francisco where he studied trumpet at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music while also training to be a physician before he ultimately chose a career in music. Henderson has played with such greats as John Handy, Tyrone Washington, and Joe Henderson, in addition to his own group. He gained recognition for his work with The Herbie Hancock Sextet (1970-1973), although his own records tended to be commercial. In addition to his stint with Hancock, Henderson has performed with such notables as Art Blakey, Dexter Gordon, Roy Haynes, Jackie McLean, Joe Henderson, Elvin Jones, Johnny Griffin, Slide Hampton, Benny Golson, Max Roach and McCoy Tyner. Presently Henderson performs as a regular with the Mingus Big Band and tours with his own quartet. Over the years he has played and recorded with musicians as diverse as Max Roach, Woody Herman, Archie Shepp, James Moody, and Slide Hampton.

Weidman is a member of the Grammy Nominated Joe Lovano Band and for five years he was the featured keyboardist for Steve Coleman and the Five Elements as well as the M-Base Collective. Beyond his sideman chops James has also been the preferred accompanist for some of the world’s most celebrated singers, including legendary jazz vocalist Abbey Lincoln, and Cassandra Wilson. Since 1992 he has been pianist and Musical Director for Kevin Mahogany. 30 years of working in a myriad of styles have helped Weidman develop his extraordinary technique and subtle understanding of music. Weidman fits into the modern mainstream of jazz without being predictable. With original chord changes and unique voicings, his mastery is demonstrated with an adept sense of rhythm and time. James also sits on the faculty of William Paterson University
