SHORT BIO
The head of a trio which made a strong impression when 'Optic Topic' their first album was released, Matthieu Donarier is now one of the most spoken about and wanted saxophone players in the French scene. Born in the west of France, he lived in Paris between 1995 and 2003 where he first studied in the department of Jazz and improvised musics at the Conservatoire National Supérieur before developping his network in the capital. In 1998 he set up his own trio which won at once several awards among which the 1st band prize at the Défense competition in 1999 and since then has been part of numerous musical adventures: Daniel Humair's 'Babyboom', 'Le Sacre du Tympan', Gábor Gadó Quartet, Caratini Jazz Ensemble, Stephan Oliva ...

With the release of his first trio album 'Optic Topic', YOLK became his main musical 'home base': Residences, creations and albums now take place within this label based in Nantes and made up of Alban Darche, Sébastien Boisseau, Jean-Louis Pommier as well as of a part of the French scene. YOLK welcomes the albums of his own bands as well as those which he closely collaborates with: Alban Darche's Le Gros Cube, Unit, Wood and Yolk en Cuisine.

Today he is the leader of three projects: The Trio - with Manu Codjia (guitar) and Joe Quitzke (drums) active for 12 years in Europe, the Middle East and North America - Kindergarten - with Poline Renou, a fresh unplugged duo which blends chamber music, polyrythmic structure and litterature - and also his latest project in association with the dutch pianist Albert Van Veenendaal's "Planetarium" (album 2014 on Clean feed).

Don't forget his co-leader project "WOOD" with the great doublebass player Sebastien Boisseau, their meeting in a duo is a musical jewel

With a passion for litterature and drawing, Matthieu Donarier develops a music which reinvents itself endlessly, where sound is a material to be sculpted, a deeply rythmical structure where the frontiers of improvisation and composition tend to fade away.
