Lo Five Short Info

Lo Five is the experimental electronic music project of Neil Grant, who combines contemporary influences such as Boards of Canada, Tobacco, Jon Hopkins etc with guitar based artists and bands like Jimi Hendrix, Nirvana and My Bloody Valentine - resulting in an intriguing and uplifting crossover that sits somewhere in between IDM and shoegaze.

"I've been playing in bands since I was 15, everything from 60s psychedelia to alt-country to shoegaze. I've always found it a frustrating experience though as you're quite limited in the palette of sounds available to you - you're also confined by the perceived constraints of each genre. During this period of playing and experimenting with the guitar I developed a love of instrumental music that started when I heard ‘Roygbiv’ by Boards of Canada. It opened up a new world of music to me as it was the first 'electronic' music that resonated with me on an emotional level. "

"Since then there's been a steady blossoming of bands that seem to be influenced by a lot of Warp records' output - it feels as though there are less boundaries now between guitar bands and electronic acts, there's been a lot more cross pollination and I think that's seen the beginning of a new wave of experimental producers who have access to computers, music software and instruments and they’re forging ahead with all kinds of stuff that’s never been heard before. I think despite some of the ‘classic’ pop music influences I think Lo Five fits somewhere along that spectrum. The key thing for me though is about engaging myself emotionally – I don’t want people to listen to my music and think “That’s clever, how did he do that?”; I want them to switch off and let it wash over them, make them feel something, a nameless emotion or sensation that uplifts or elates."

"Since I started putting this music out last year there’s been a positive response that I’ve been quite surprised by. I self released an LP and followed that with an EP - and there's more currently in production. I’ve been featured on BBC Introducing on Radio Merseyside and I’ve played a couple of festivals, LIMF and Threshold – as well as regular gigs at Sound Food & Drink. Open Culture also used one of my tracks for a promo film they shot for their Light Night festival. I’ve recently played the Getintothis.co.uk launch party at the Kazimier, which was showcased other new bands to watch in Liverpool."
