Kavita Shah Quintet Short Info

"All of Shah's music reflects the insatiably curious mind of an ethnographer, the soul of a poet, and the eye of a painter." - Owen McNally, WNPR

"A musician's singer...always taking risks and searching for new levels of understanding. Her music defies categorization." - Steve Wilson, Grammy-winning jazz saxophonist

BIOGRAPHY

A "breathtakingly beautiful" new voice in contemporary jazz (Downbeat Magazine), vocalist-composer Kavita Shah has been praised for her “amazing dexterity for musical languages” (NPR). Shah, a protégé of jazz legend Sheila Jordan, is a native New Yorker of Indian origin fluent in Spanish, Portuguese, and French; she incorporates themes of diaspora into her work using her in-depth knowledge of various cultural traditions to place seemingly eclectic and diverse songs, instruments, and musicians in dialogue with one another.

Her debut album VISIONS, co-produced by guitar virtuoso Lionel Loueke, fuses a jazz quintet with the Indian tabla and West African kora to create a strikingly original sound all her own. Released in 2014 on the Paris-based label Naïve Records, VISIONS was dubbed a “sparkling debut" (Boston Globe), a "beautiful discovery" (Télérama), “daring and ambitious" (Jazzwise UK), and Best Vocal & Debut Album of 2014 (Will Hermes, Rolling Stone).

Shah, who regularly tours Europe with her French quintet, has performed at the Kennedy Center, Blue Note, Iridium, Jazz Standard, Joe's Pub, Winter Jazz Festival, Rochester Jazz Festival, Paris' Duc des Lombards, and venues across France, Belgium, and Poland. She has collaborated with Sheila Jordan, Lionel Loueke, Greg Osby, Steve Wilson, François Moutin, Yacouba Sissoko, and Samir Chatterjee. Named by Downbeat as Best Graduate Jazz Vocalist (2012) and recipient of ASCAP’s Young Jazz Composers Award (2013), Shah holds a Master’s in Jazz Voice from Manhattan School of Music and a Bachelor's in Latin American Studies from Harvard University.
