Julia Boman Short Info

Julia Boman is a singer/songwriter from Estonia currently living in France. A classically trained guitarist, Julia started composing songs at the age of 19. She has won several prizes in music competitions in Estonia, among which the second prize in the national TV competition performing her own composition. In 2004 she released a CD of original music called « VAGABOND », accompanying herself on guitar.

In 2006, Julia has moved to France, where she graduated from Conservatoire de Strasbourg specialising in jazz voice and free improvisation. A finalist of the French vocal contest Crest Jazz Vocal and the Montreux Jazz Voice Competition, Julia enjoys performing both original music and the jazz repertoire. In 2011, Julia Boman released her second album called « MY FAVOURITE THINGS » with a selection of jazz standards and the singer’s own compositions.

A project to record a piano-voice duo together with Jean-Baptiste Aubert came along after a few years of collaboration between the two musicians. Their upcoming CD « INFANT EYES » is a CD of ballads, inspired by the work of such artists as Jeanne Lee and Ran Blake. The duo takes their time to savour a silence, a lyric or a piano chord. Some titles are as well-known as You don’t know what love is, Jobim’s Luiza or Wayne Shorter’s Footprints or Infant Eyes with lyrics by the singer; others are original compositions.

The new project « POTOK » came together in 2014, together with Jean-Rene Mourot (piano), Enrico Pedicone (percussion and live electronics) and Guido Pedicone (live electronics). It draws inspiration from musical works around poetry composed by Steve Lacy, Carla Bley, Sergei Prokofiev, etc. as well as from contemporary classical music and free improvisation artists. In this project, the music is guided by the melodic lines of the chosen poems. Languages used include Russian, English, French or invented/improvised ones. Some of the tunes have written out melodies and arrangements; some works are completely improvised. Acoustic and electronic sounds are blended into an imporvised universe of the poems.
