John Dickinson was born in 1983 into an American musician’s family in Basel, Switzerland and spent his childhood in the Basel area.

At 4 years he began singing in local choirs, at 5 he took his first recorder lessons and started having fun improvising. He started studying classical vibraphone, drums and percussion with Jean-Claude Forestier and Thomas Waldner at the age of 10 and started dabbling in jazz 2 years later playing his first duo piano/vibes gigs. Taking a few detours – i.e. an environmental sciences degree from ETH Zurich – he earned his Bachelor degree Jazz department of the Hochschule Luzern studying vibraphone with Thomas Dobler.
As a vibraphonist he’s been able to gain experience in various pop, jazz, folklore, world music & classical formations in Switzerland and abroad. In addition, John Dickinson collaborated in multiple studio productions in areas of pop and film music, most notably with Swiss music artist Sophie Hunger (“Monday’s Ghost”, “Zimmer 202”).
