Joel Culpepper Meets J. Dilla | Mixtape | 2011 | |
Adventures of Pensmith | Mixtape | 2009 |
With a distinctive style inspired by British fashion and modern culture, Joel has been described as ‘the UK’s answer to Andre 3000 and Frank Ocean’.
Since 2009 and the release of Joel’s first music project, ‘The Adventures of Pensmith’ (Mixtape), the singer has continued to impress with his distinctive sound and stage presence. His band, ‘The Transformers’, provide the musical backdrop for his shows, which push boundaries and offer audiences an intense and energetic set of music. Living up to their name, each musician plays at least two instruments; ‘transforming’ during Joel’s dynamic live sets. Joel has performed at; YOYO’S Notting Hill Arts Club, Jools Holland’s Boisdale, Cargo, XOYO, Hard Rock Cafe, Village Underground, Jazz Cafe, Boomtown festival and Bestival.
In 2011, Joel released his second Mixtape, ‘Joel Culpepper Meets J. Dilla’, a tribute project to the late, great producer. This generated considerable interest amongst bloggers and music fans, successfully showcasing Joel’s strong song-writing skills and quirky vocal style. Joel’s debut EP, ‘Skydive’, which was released in 2012 has also been well received by music fans. The project takes listeners on a story-teller’s journey of love and life’s lessons. It continues to generate fresh interest and has received support from DJs such as, DJ Target, Trevor Nelson, Annie Mac, Huw Stephens, Charlie Sloth and Toddla T. Joel was also BBC Introducing's Artist of the Week in June 2014 and was invited to perform on the BBC Introducing stage at last year's Bestival.
Joel is putting finishing touches to his new EP, 'Tortoise', set for release later this year. It includes production by Grammy Award winning producer, Jimmy Hogarth (Amy Winehouse, Paolo Nutini, Duffy, James Morrison, KT Tunstall); Morgan Nicholls (Muse, Gorillaz, The Streets, Lily Allen); Zed Bias (Gabrielle, Kosheen, The Streets) and Roy Davis Jr (Mary J Blige, Seal).
Joel’s determined to champion individuality through music that’s honest, real and unforgettable. There’s without question, a growing sense of anticipation around the chap with the unusual name- Culpepper.
