ENGLISH

Are drummers actually the better band leaders? Paul Motian, Chico Hamilton or Wolfgang Haffner, Dejan Terzic and Dirik Schilgen in Germany have already be able to take center stage in different formats with their own projects. And one thing seems certain: Once a drummer holds an imaginary conductor baton in his hand, every music sounds different. More organic, complex and balanced. Far removed from the noisy beatings of brute-force egomaniacs. Instead, it results in a finely balanced, emotional, often even quite fragile construct, in which a team concept is clearly in the foreground and someone cleverly conducts from the drums in a very unassuming manner.

These multi-talented drummer can often compose music too. The prototype of this modern type of a jazz musician is Jens Düppe from Cologne. A brooding refined and free spirit, who also knows how to give his own fantasies shape with just as a refined hands At times with lighted matches, vitamin tablets dissolving in water, torn paper, peas rolling in a bowl, rustling plastic bags or rattling silverware and dishes in a "noise café", then back to the improvisational concert series "Kommunikation9" acoustically with the "Jens Düppe Akustik Band" electronically with the duo NEOFOBIC as well as with independent composers such as Django Bates, Paolo Fresu or Markus Stockhausen or with out-and-out jazz musicians such as Maria Schneider, Kenny Werner and Albert Mangelsdorff. Above all thanks to his proverbial openness, Düppe is one of the most innovative drummers and percussionists in Germany. As a result, it is somewhat of a surprise that we had to wait so long for his first album under his own name. But good things take time to ripen, as is well known. "Anima" is like a checksum of all those experiences that the fair-haired musician born in Schwabisch Gmund has been able to gain during the course of his entertaining and long career. To bundle these in a perfect form, band members are needed who understand each other, harmonize perfectly not only in the musical sense and know each other from many years on the stage together. "We really understand each other," Jens Düppe summarizes it in a nutshell. "The kind of enthusiasm can only then develop that my songs need to live."

For the recording of "Anima", Düppe took his quartet with Lars Duppler (piano), Frederik Köster (trumpet) and Christian Ramond (bass) on a trip to the seclusion of Casgliana, a recording studio in the hilly seclusion of Sardinia. Distraction was created at most by the scenic surroundings. Otherwise, just sleeping, eating and playing music, everything together. Twenty-four hours a day together in a confined space focusing on the really essential. The primus inter pares on drums was certain, "That simply has to affect the later result!" However, the atmosphere was still electric during the sessions. Among the band members, the pianist Lars Duppler had known Düppe the longest. Both have already been working together in various formations for 10 years. "No words are needed between us." Common ground was also quickly found with Christian Ramond. He is one of the most unconventional bassists ever, the drummer praised him, and he fits easily into any concept. The encounter with Frederik Köster already seemed much more exciting. Not only Düppe considers him "one of the best trumpet players who exists." Of course, how would this shooting star of German jazz interpret the original works of the drummer, which the composer himself considers "rather trumpet atypical"?

The answer is found in 11 robust, lovingly detailed, meditative as well as moving pieces breathtaking in every respect, all with a distinctive character and sound. Frederik Köster dances and reels as do his three brothers in spirit, almost weightlessly through the musical hills of "Anima" until everything merges into a collective expression. A question of mutual trust and a stable center. The perfect job for a drummer such as Jens Düppe.
