HANNO BUSCH TRIO

__Hanno Busch

Nomination ECHO Jazz 2015 (Gitarre/ national)

The Cologne (Germany) based guitar player Hanno Busch is an exciting, inspiring musician. His genuine, recognisable and ever evolving style, combined with great flexibility and curiosity make him one of a kind in the European music scene and let bring together musical genres and sounds that appear to be completely incompatible at first. He studied at Amsterdam School Of The Arts, successfully taking different musical paths right from the start. Like this, he toured and recorded with both well established and upcoming jazz artists, such as Peter Weniger, the NDR Big Band feat. Bobby McFerrin, Niels Klein - "Tubes & Wires", Peter Herbolzheimer's "Rhythm Combination & Brass", "re:jazz" or Jesse Milliner. At the same time, he worked with Rock'n'Roll legend Peter Kraus, popstar Sasha or leading indie pop artist PeterLicht. Since 2007, he has been a regular member of the "Heavytones", Gemany's best TV-Band.
Working together with Michael Wollny and Tamar Halperin in their project "Wunderkammer", playing at the prestigious Jazz Baltica in 2010, inspired Busch to pursue his own creative ways more intensely. He formed both his own trio and the quartet "Sommerplatte", for which he has contributed all songs, together with keyboard player Tobias Philippen.

__Hanno Busch :: Trio

Claus Fischer and Hanno Busch started their musical relationship back in 2004, when Fischer asked him to join his band for the TV-Show "Anke Late Night" (SAT1). The two of them continued to join forces for several projects from that point on, touring and recording with Cosmo Klein & "The Phunkguerilla", Gregor Meyle, Renée Olstead, Jesse Milliner, Peter Weninger and - last but not least - their own band "Sommerplatte".
Jonas Burgwinkel is currently among the most celebrated avantgarde jazz drummers in Europe. Busch asked him to join his trio because he was looking for a completely different and fresh perspective. Burgwinkel is a master at combining a free jazz approach and moving dance beats with intriguing ease. Like that, he seemed to be the perfect missing link, completing Busch's vision of his trio sound.

___Hanno Busch Trio ::: Absent

Busch wrote the songs for his debut during several years, searching for the right balance between pattern oriented atmospheres and song structures on the one hand and a free attitude based on improvisation and experiment on the other. Not unlike in modern electronic music, Busch got a lot of inspiration from his setup that is centered around analog gear by Moog. This vision of a modern, electro-influenced sound also contributed to hiring sound engineer Phil Kullmann (Raw Artistic Productions) who has worked extensively not only in jazz, but also house, world Music and pop productions. And the search for that special sound continued with Sascha "Busy" Bühren's mastering and Daniel Krieger's vinyl cut, both top notch in their respective fields.
"Absent" is a debut album that radiates all these witty choices and a big love for detail. Extremely atmospheric compositions, sophisticated musical textures and powerful rhythmical patterns come together with a band who carries away the listener with its sheer musical enthousiasm and unique sound. And it is one of the miracles on this album that these three completely different and highly profiled musicians have joined forces to form a very diverse and yet extremely homogenous combination. There is certainly a lot of virtuosity at work, but never for its own sake. Finally, you cannot help but ask yourself what exactly you are listening to: This music sounds phantastic, with beautiful melodies and a euphoric power: it must be pop. But this music, at the same time, is also based on great freedom, a finely tuned playfulness and a lot of improvisation: it must be jazz. But in the end, this might be a boring and irrelevant question. Because it is much more thrilling to just listen to this album that speaks for itself: ABSENT.
