Freeman Short Info

Freeman are a very talented trio of artists who range from Traditional Rock to Country to Folk music combining original material with the odd cover.

Freeman are:

Julie - So, it all started for me when I was having a good night out and enjoying some drinks with Ste and some other friends, and Ste said, "You didn't tell me you could sing!" He had come across a video I'd posted on my Facebook when a friend of mine and I did our own (hungover) version of The Cup Song from the film, Pitch Perfect...so it seems alcohol had a big role to play in the formation of our band! Ste and Andy had already been writing and playing songs together for a number of years, both on guitar with Ste on vocals. They more recently decided to revamp some of their older songs, only this time with a female vocalist. We decided to see what it would sound like with me singing their songs, and it didn't take very long to realise how much we enjoyed playing/singing together, and how much I admired their music. I'd say we do some pretty meaningful, low key stuff, which is something I'm proud of. We've also done a couple of covers, and now we want to create some quirky, up beat tunes so we've got good variety. Being in a band is new to me and I'm still finding my feet...we've been looking at writing a new song and it's still a working progress- until then, have a listen to our material. We hope you enjoy it as much as we do.

Steve - As a song writer I have never consciously thought of the style of music I wanted to write. When writing with Andy it has always been a spur of the moment thing… we play whatever feels right to us and what is right for the song. The songs we have written over the years have always taken their own shape and were literally written in a matter of minutes and for me they are the songs that you can write… songs that come out of nowhere and suddenly exist. Only upon reflection when you listen to them back further down the road you say to yourself… “Wow where did that come from? Did I write that?!” When writing acoustic driven songs it was always paramount for Andrew and me to make them strong enough to be carried by a single guitar track and the vocals alone and then build them from there. Now although I am capable vocalist, in the back of my mind I always felt the songs we had written would sound much better with a female vocalist, so I really hit the jack pot when I heard Julie’s voice. I didn’t hesitate to tell Andrew about my friend of around 5 years who kept this secret from me! From our first rehearsal together Julie’s voice fitted perfectly with the tone of our music and gave it the edge we have been looking for all this time! It’s a privilege to be involved with Freeman and I hope you agree that our music is at an acceptable level to finally release into the world. It is our intention to get out there and share our material with as much people as possible. Hopefully one day we will see you on the road!

Andy - Since first picking up my first acoustic guitar, it has always been a love of mine to create music from just one instrument. The way in which it blends a tune and its own percussion is almost unique. I first met Steve in our first rock band and found we had a talent for writing music together. Once the band folded, Steve and I kept writing through the medium of acoustic. Quickly building simple, but capturing songs with usually one but sometimes 2 acoustic guitars. We played our first gig through a local promoter and built on it to play to various audiences. Even after we both formed another rock band, we both acknowledged that some of our finest work was in our acoustic past. That was when Steven introduced me to Julie. It'll embarrass her to say that she has one of the finest voices I've heard and she seemed like that piece we needed to take us to the next level. We are very proud of our little group and hope we can gain some friends on the way...
