Elixir Short Info

Elixir is a trio of friends and musicians -- multi-platinum selling songstress Katie Noonan, outstanding saxophonist Zac Hurren and the highly-regarded jazz guitarist Stephen Magnusson. Each artist brings to the project an individual style and potency. The result is an improvised folk and jazz-inspired blend of music.

Life and music has moved forward for the bandmembers since Elixir issued their self-titled debut, a top 20 national hit following its release in 2003. Drawing inspiration from the likes of Nick Drake and Joni Mitchell, Elixir has always been about poetry, set to music. On “Elixir”, the musical framework was constructed around the lyrics of writer Martin Challis. Their album 'First Seed Ripening' uses the works of celebrated poet Thomas Shapcott as their key ingredient.

Katie Noonan needs little introduction to Australian audiences. A Queensland Conservatorium of Music alumnus, Katie effortlessly made the transition from academia to the big league through her alternative pop-rock group George, which she fronted with her brother Tyrone. In 2002, the group’s debut release “Polyserena” opened at No. 1 on the ARIA albums chart, instantly establishing Katie as a star. In recent years, the multi-platinum selling vocalist has recorded a string of solo and collaborative projects. "Emperor’s Box” with her group The Captains, was a top 30 hit through Sony Music following its release in 2010. In 2008 Katie recorded her album 'Blackbird' in New York City, where she worked with the cream of veteran Jazz players including Ron Carter, Lewis Nash, Joe Lovano, John Scofield and Sam Keevers. 'Blackbird' went on to win 'Best Jazz album' at the 2009 ARIAs. To date, Katie’s albums have certified seven-times platinum in Australia and she has been awarded 4 ARIAs and countless nominations spanning 15 years in the industry.

Flanking Katie in the Elixir line-up are Stephen Magnusson, and her husband Zac Hurren. Zac is a unique and distinctly Australian saxophonist, composer and improviser. Steeped in the jazz heritage of Coltrane, Shorter, Coleman and Shepp, the artist is also deeply inspired by homegrown greats McGann, Simmonds, Barlow and Tinkler. The distillation of these traditions has resulted in a musicianship of fiery passion and quirky intellect. Zac’s well-received debut album “Exordium” was released in Australia mid-2007 on local label Jazzhead. In some critical corners, the release was declared as a triumphant arrival on the contemporary jazz scene. Another career highpoint would come in 2009, when Zac won the prestigious National Jazz Award at the Wangaratta Festival of Jazz.

Regarded by many as Australia’s finest jazz guitarist, Stephen Magnusson has shared the limelight with the likes of Paul Grabowsky, Scott Tinkler, Michelle Nicole, Paul Kelly and Vince Jones. He was awarded the Swiss Diagonal Arts Grant and the Pop Kredit award in 1999, was co-winner of National Jazz Award the following year, and has been nominated for the Freedman Fellowship (twice) and the Melbourne Prize for Outstanding Musician. in 2013 Stephen was awarded the Australian Jazz Bell Award for Best Contemporary Jazz Album with his quartet MAGNET (with Carl Pannuzzo, Eugene Ball and Sergio Beresovsky).

The album 'First Seed Ripening' was released in August of 2011. Debuting at #1 on the ARIA Jazz charts where it spent 13 weeks, 'First Seed Ripening' and Elixir then went on to take out the 2011 ARIA Award (Jazz category).

“Our aim,” explains Katie, “is to make gentle, intimate music.”

Elixir will cast a spell on you.
