Brian Groder– This composer/trumpeter’s music is not limited to a single tradition; he draws on an entire rich musical history and styles, creating music that freely combines composition and improvisation.

His unique approach was the subject of a 2010 Downbeat profile. His CD with the renowned pianist Burton Green, Groder and Greene, was lauded as “Best Release of 2009” by All About Jazz. Torque, with the legendary Sam Rivers, was named by Downbeat as one of the Best Jazz CDs of 2007. Earlier CDs Ancestral Tongues, Perihelion and Incantations all drew critical praises in Europe and Japan. FluiDensity, is a new recording project of spontaneous improvisations centered off modern classical musical motifs with the acclaimed Italian pianist Tonino Miano. Commissioned works include the five movement 2010 “Cartologia Suite” by the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council; the 2006 St. Marks DanSpace Project, a three movement “Jazz Dance Suite” for choreographer Cherylyn Lavagnino, with additional support from the American Music Center’s CAP Award and the 2004 Orlando Fringe Festival extended production of “Solos” by playwright Joseph Hayes. Composition-Improvisation Fellowships awarded him by Atlantic Center for the Arts with Cecil Taylor (2000) and Joanne Brackeen (1997).
