Their timeless melodies and soaring harmonies tip a hat to the pop nous of greats like The Beach Boys, Kate Bush and The Beatles as well as contemporary singer-songwriters like Rufus Wainwright and James Mercer.
Bird To Beast is the brainchild of recently married couple, Sam and Hannah Hird. The duo both grew up in the Lancashire town of Colne, but their paths hadn’t crossed until a chance meeting at the town’s annual blues festival. A couple of years later, after much deliberation, they decided to start writing music together and formed Bird To Beast.
Ex-sheep farmer, Sam started playing violin aged four and has studied and played music for most of his life. Never one to follow trends he missed out on Britpop in the 90’s, deciding instead to immerse himself in classical music studies at Cheatham School of Music and then The University of Manchester.
Hannah came early to music too, and started playing piano aged seven, later singing in a number of choirs and going on to study at The University of Salford. For the past year she has toured with singer Ellie Goulding, singing backing vocals and performing at numerous festivals and TV shows, including, Later with Jools Holland, The Jonathan Ross Show – and even William and Kate’s Royal Wedding reception.
The duo signed an album deal with new Manchester indie MUK Records late last year.
Their debut single, the beautiful accordion-led, ‘To Lips From Lungs’ will be released as a free download for a limited period on 10th June coinciding with a single launch party at new Manchester hot spot The Whisky Jar.
Second single ‘Elephant ‘will follow on 18th August with their debut self-titled album set for release in early September 2013.
