Axel Jansson Short Info

“From the moment I held my first guitar upside down in my hands I realised that this was what I wanted to do. It didn’t matter that I was left-handed and the guitar was intended for a right-handed person. I was too excited to wait for the shop to order me a left-handed one, I wanted to get going, and besides, I was already in love.”

This rash decision was to make learning twice as hard, but a very young Axel Jansson prevailed and, to this day, plays only right-handed guitars.

“I used to get so frustrated in the beginning,” he reveals. “I’d abandon the exercises I was supposed to be practicing and instead I’d perform to my favourite records at home with the volume at full whack and me just hitting the open strings really hard until my parents could stand no more. It didn’t improve my skills but it fed my passion”

Thanks to his father’s extensive record collection, Axel has drawn inspiration from a diverse range of artists dating right back to the rock genre of the 60’s and 70’s to more modern day artists such as The Killers, Coldplay and John Mayer. Axel’s songwriting is heartfelt and honest, infusing lush melodies with alternative rock and a big dose of bold pop. These are songs of love and life that are set to resonate with all who hear them.

“Music is a powerful tool. It’s a way of expressing feelings and sending messages. I have always been interested in what artists are saying in their songs and how people relate to them.”

Completing the package is Axel’s unique voice, an edgy mix of grit and venerability that somehow sounds older than his years.

“It came out of necessity,” he says. “After a while it became pretty boring just recording chords and adding a guitar or piano melody that really needed to be sung instead. I kind of forced myself to do it, and it turned out that it didn’t sound that bad, which was very surprising to me. Who knew I could sing?”

Originating from Sweden, Axel began considering his options after graduating from high school in Gothenburg. The aspiring artist started looking into specialist music schools in Boston, Los Angeles and London.

“It was my mother who found Tech Music School on the internet. I thought it sounded really cool, so I called them up. Before long I was in London and auditioning for a place.”

Having being accepted onto the course, Axel left home and moved to the U.K. where he has lived for almost 3 years.

“It was pretty scary moving away from my family and friends, but it just felt like the right thing to do. My expectations were to get better as a musician and player and to meet the right people.”

It wasn’t long before Axel did just that, meeting with a part-time teacher at the school, who also just happened to own a recording studio.

“We sat down for an hour after class and just talked; he was exactly the guy I was hoping to meet when I came to London. The following day I sent him several songs I had recorded on my phone! To cut a long story short, he offered me the chance to be an artist and record my first album.”

Since that fateful meeting, Axel Jansson has been developing his writing skills and musical style with the man in question, producer James D Bell, growing an impressive catalogue of songs over the last two years. Based in East London, Axel has since supported Turin Breaks and Jo Hamilton and is set to release his debut EP in January 2015.
