Anton Hunter Trio - Jazz Postrock Improvisation Live Act in Manchester

Anton Hunter Trio Short Info

This trio marked the first time Anton stepped out on his own as the leader of his own group to showcase all his own compositions. More ambient and less frenetic than his work with HAQ or Beats & Pieces, there is still a great love of both free improvisation and strong melodies.

Formed for the Manchester Jazz Festival 2012, all the music was written with these players in mind. The Anton Hunter Trio is not just Anton + 2, but a coherent unit that plays to the strengths of each member and combines them to make something stronger than the sum of it’s parts. The material explores and blurs the boundaries between composition and free, often quite abstract, improvisation.

The influences that feed into the music are diverse, inspired as much by jazz guitarists such as Bill Frisell, Nels Cline and Stian Westerhus as by experimental rock bands such as Godspeed! You Black Emperor, Radiohead and Tortoise. The result is sometimes huge soundscapes, sometimes delicate textures, but always a springboard for collective improvisations.

Since then, Anton's profile has risen within the UK. He is a Sound And Music "New Voices" composer and won the Irwin Mitchell MJF Originals commission at the 2014 Manchester Jazz Festival for his new large-scale work 'Article XI'. The trio has featured several times on BBC Radio's Jazz on 3 program, both live and on record.

“I love what they’re doing with time … there’s a great sensuality about the way they play” Kevin Le Gendre, Jazz on 3
