1000 Mexicans Short Info

1000 Mexicans were one of the most innovative and creative British independent bands of the 1980s, combining quality songwriting and rhythmic and harmonic richness with their unique touches of experimentalism.

Despite success in Europe, indie chart placings, Radio 1 daytime airplay, a video shown on BBC 2’s Whistle Test, and consistent critical acclaim including front cover features in Sounds and Melody Maker, the band found themselves in a tangle of bad business deals that strangled their creative momentum and finally their will to live, leaving them to go their separate ways in 1986.

Founder members Michael and Andrew have now reanimated 1000 Mexicans as a duo and have been writing and recording new material to supplement their catalogue of 80s favourites. The single 'Why Do We Take This' was released in March, and they have also contributed a track to the compilation 'There Must Be a Hole in Your Memory', a tribute to the songs of Adrian Borland and The Sound.

The new live set is leaner, meaner and more danceable than the 20th century version and, while still finding space for the pair to stretch out on trumpet and guitars alongside the laptop-generated beats and synths, focuses more clearly on the strength of the songs and on the power of Andrew’s soulful vocals.
